GR Japan will host an international symposium, "Protecting Fisheries Resources and Fisheries Industry from Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing", from 4pm on Thursday, 10 November.

Due to the increasing global consumption of seafood, over 80% of fisheries resources are over utilized or have reached the limits of their capacity and have no room to expand production, increasing the importance of appropriate fisheries resource management. In light of this, an estimated 13-31% of the world's seafood is presumed likely to constitute illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) catch.  IUU fishing operations not only pose a serious threat to the sustainability of fisheries resources, they are also linked to socio-economic problems such as human rights abuses. Moreover, IUU fishing threatens the fisheries industries of countries like Japan where resources are managed appropriately.

In this symposium, measures by the EU and the US such as import regulation and providing appropriate information to consumers will be introduced, and consideration will be given to a system for protecting fisheries resources and the fisheries industry in our country and around the world.
